Editing someone else's work

- Let me share a secret with you. It's so much easier to proofread someone else's work than your own. Simply because you haven't been sitting there writing, your perspective is fresh. When looking over something written by a friend, colleague, or client, the first thing to do is read it all the way through and trust your gut. Then ask these questions: Does it make sense? Why or why not? Do you know what they're trying to say? And, can you think of a more direct way to say it? Your first pass should alert you to any content problems. When you return to areas that seem unclear, read them aloud. Sometimes unfamiliar ideas or phrasing can seem incorrect, but once you reread you figure out if you would recommend any changes. Next, how does the document look? Does it have a set format that you can consult? Does the amount of text or its layout look appropriate? Now, take a look for errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. These will stand out far easier in things you don't write. If…
