- Now, here are some more hedging or weak words. It seems that Apple's earnings this time around are less than impressive. Can you spot them? First off, we've got the words, it seems. Now, just think about that weak phrase, it seems. If that's how it seems to you, then do you really need to say that that's how it seems? Won't the reader already assume that this is how it seems to you, since you're the one who is saying it? We can make this sentence more forceful by simply saying, Apple's earnings this time around are less than impressive. You still got your view across, that Apple's earnings are less than impressive. And you got it across more directly and forcefully. So please look out for little phrases like that, it seems, it appears, or I think, or I believe, which can often slip through the net and weaken your writing, people will usually already assume that this is your thought, your believe, your view, your opinion, so do you really need to take the bite out of your sentences…
