- Now a lot of people use stresses, things like italics or bold or underline or in quotations marks, to stress various words in their sentences. And the idea is that they worry that if they don't stress these words, people won't get the emphasis that they're trying to create. This is okay in things like marketing. But if you are writing a business communication of some sort, I think it's overdone, this stressing of words. And it's often done because people worry that someone won't get the stress that they're trying to make. And the truth is that often you really don't need it. So you might sort of find yourself stressing it. And then, but never really looking at what it looks like when you remove the stress that you've just added. And it's always worthwhile to try it without the stress as well, because it's a little bit classier. It's a little bit hysterical. So it's something to bear in mind.
