- [Instructor] Covers are a very sensitive issue for authors and publishing houses. So let's take a few minutes to discuss them here. A common question I get from writers and readers alike is do you get a say in your own book cover. The answer is a complicated one and I'll tell you why. It really depends on your editor and the politics of your individual publishing house. You might have noticed that in your publishing contract, under a section about cover art, you might have been given what is called cover consultation. This unfortunately for most authors means close to nothing it means the publisher contractually has to show you the cover first before they put it on your finished book. It does not mean that you have any control over whether or not that cover is used. This is in comparison to something called cover approval, which means you have to approve the cover before it's put on the book not just see it.
