- Has this ever happened to you? You and a friend are hungry, so you decide to go out to eat. You get in your car, start the engine and begin driving, but you haven't decided where you're going yet, so you pull out of your driveway all gung ho only to realize at the first intersection you have no idea where you're headed. This actually happens to me in my car more often than I'd like to admit, but it doesn't happen in my writing, at least not anymore. The pressure of an impending deadline can make writers wanna put the pedal to the metal and get rolling as fast as possible, but lurching into the writing process before you have a clear idea of what you wanna say and how you plan to say it will burn through your time and your energy needlessly. So I've collected a couple of techniques over the years for helping me clear away all of the extraneous ideas that are bouncing around in my head about a writing project and quickly zoom in on my main message before I begin writing.
