- Now as well as avoiding technical words and abstract words, we also want to choose colorful ones. And this is where I often get misunderstood because people sometimes think when I say use simple language, that it means use plain, dull, boring words all the time. That's not what I mean, I just mean simplify it. But then add color here and there where it's useful. So I just really just trying to stop you from defaulting to pretentious, kind of pseudo-sophisticated language, that is not simple. You don't gain sophistication by just using a complex word. You use it by picking and choosing words that are colorful and appropriate to your particular purpose. So we should spice up our writing as much as possible using colorful words whenever we can. Particularly these ones that create pictures and images. And emotions. Like, at the same time we shouldn't overdo it either. So we don't wanna sound like we've just swallowed a thesaurus.
