Bringing out your voice

- Writing is a kind of acting. You take on voice to deliver a message. The central challenge of acting is to speak in a voice that's not yours and yet make it seem perfectly natural. Actors spend a lot of time observing their own everyday behavior to see what their natural looks and feels like. This is their instrument. As a writer you also have an instrument. You have an entire lifetime of conversations. You've used words to tell jokes, to show anger, to comfort loved ones. It's your unique treasure. Yet many writers leave it at the door in a quest to match some platonic ideal of serious or salesy or funny. But the assignment is just the script.
