What you should know

- [Instructor] In this course we're going to build out our own custom post types and taxonomies. We're going to build a plug-in, as well as modify a theme. Because of that, you should be familiar with HTML, CSS and PHP, as well as how to create how to create WordPress child themes and plugins. You should also have a local development environment that runs WordPress. You also need to know how to use WordPress in general. If this is your first WordPress course I recommend you take a look at Word Press 5 Essential Training. You'll get to learn the ins and outs of how to use WordPress, the block editor, installing and activating themes and plugins and more. In this course I will be using the 2019 theme, which comes installed with WordPress by default. We're going to create a child theme so we can add our new post type templates. We will go over the basics, but if you really want to understand child themes in WordPress I recommend you checking out the child themes course in our library. For local development I will be using Local by Flywheel. Depending on your platform we have several courses on local WordPress development. While Local by Flywheel works on both Windows and Mac, you can use any development environment you like. If you're looking for alternatives, for Windows, you can check out installing and running WordPress WAMP. If you're on a Mac there's installing and running WordPress MAMP. With our theme and local environment set we're ready to start learning about custom post types and taxonomies.
