Learn about shared hosting, what it is, where to get it, pros, and cons. Shared hosting can be a very inexpensive solution that is great for beginners.
- [Instructor] Shared hosting is a great way to get started with your own WordPress site. Shared hosting is very common, inexpensive, and can be easier to manage than other hosting options. A shared hosting account is like renting an apartment. They tend to be inexpensive, flexible, and available to almost anyone. The downside is that your neighbors may cause problems that effect the performance and stability of your site. With a shared hosting plan, resources like memory and bandwidth are shared by all accounts on the server. With shared hosting you get your own predefined amount of disk space for your files. But then previous resources like RAM, processing power, and bandwidth are shared by all the accounts on the server. So that means if you have good neighbors, you probably will have a good experience with shared hosting. Conversely, if your neighbors are loud and not well-behaved, then your shared hosting experience may not be so great. For example, if other sites on the server are hogging resources, it can negatively impact your sites performance. Does that mean you should not use shared hosting? No, not at all. As long as you understand the pros and cons before signing up, you can find much success on a shared server. In general, the pros outweigh the cons. So don't let the possibility of a few bad neighbors stop you from going with shared hosting. A decent hosting plan with any of the more reputable shared providers will be more than sufficient to get started. If you do by chance run into any trouble, you can ask your host to move your site to a different server or upgrade your hosting to a better plan.
