Join Morten Rand-Hendriksen for an in-depth discussion in this video What is MAMP?, part of Installing and Running WordPress: MAMP.
- Before we get started, it's worth taking a couple of minutes to look at MAMP itself. What is MAMP and how does it help us run WordPress on our computer? MAMP is actually an acronym. MAMP. So let's first look at three last letters. AMP. MAMP allows us to install what's known as an AMP stack on our computer. An AMP stack consists of Apache, a web server application, MySQL, a relational database system, and php, a scripting language.
onto our computer and run them all together to create a web host on our computer that runs all the necessary components to allow us to run things like WordPress. Apache, the web server, is what allows us to access the content through our web browser. MySQL, the relational database, serves up the database system that WordPress will use to save all of its information. And finally, php is a scripting language that WordPress uses to function and also the scripting language you will use if you ever want to develop anything for WordPress.
So, MAMP allows us to install all these pieces, and links them all together. So that with a click of a button, you'll be able to start up a web server locally on a computer that you can access through your web browser even without having internet access. Now I said I would address the first M in a second. And here it comes. You see, historically, MAMP was an application only for Macs. So the first M stood for Mac. Mac, Apache, MySQL, php. However, as of MAMP version three, MAMP also comes for Windows.
So clearly, the M at the front can no longer stand for Mac at least not for the Windows version. So instead for the Windows version, the first M stands for "My". So you end up with My Apache MySQL php. And, it's an interesting shift, and it's actually kind of a big deal because MAMP has previously been a great tool only for Mac users but now they're moving into Windows as well. As of this recording, the MAMP version available for Windows is only regular MAMP, not MAMP PRO.
However, MAMP PRO for Windows is currently in beta. And who knows, by the time this course comes out, we may have a full fledged version of MAMP PRO for Windows too. And that means whether you're on Mac or on Windows you'll be able to use this awesome application to run WordPress locally on your computer. In this course, I'll only be looking at the Mac version of MAMP, but the Windows version of MAMP is so similar, that if you choose to install this on Windows, you can follow this course and do pretty much the exact same things and get it up and running.
Now there's one more important thing to know about MAMP. When you install MAMP, you're actually installing two applications. The one that's called MAMP, which is a free application anyone can download it and install, and also an application known as MAMP PRO. Now MAMP PRO gives you extended abilities, but it comes at a cost, you have to pay a licensing fee to get to use MAMP PRO. In this course, we'll first look at MAMP, how to install it and how to run WordPress under it. And then, I'll add an entire new chapter to look at how to use MAMP PRO in addition.
That way, you can see which features you get by paying for the license, and you can choose for yourself whether you want to stick with regular MAMP, or if you want to upgrade to MAMP PRO. So, with all that covered, let's get cracking.
