Join Patrick Rauland for an in-depth discussion in this video Watch out for spam, part of WordPress: Contact Forms.
[Instructor] Contact Form 7 does a great job…with spam prevention, because there are…three different options available to you,…and they're basically three different levels,…depending on how much spam you have.…The simplest solution is what's called a honeypot field.…It's a hidden field that a human would never fill out.…So, if it's filled out, your site knows it's a bot…and deletes the submission before any emails get sent.…This is great, because the user doesn't have…to fill out anything extra…and it will trick most of the bots.…The next solution is Akismet,…which we set up in a previous video.…
It's free for non-commercial sites…and it costs $5 a month if you do have a commercial site.…This uses the Cloud to detect spam,…so automatic has data on millions of sites…and they use this data,…along with the content of the submission,…to determine if it's spam.…This is a great option if you already have it set up…and you don't want to do anything extra.…But if you don't have it set up…and you don't want to pay the five bucks a month,…
