- [Instructor] Did you know that in the United States, landscape irrigation is estimated to account for nearly 1/3 of all residential water use, totally nearly nine billion gallons per day? Project teams can meet the requirements of the outdoor water use reduction prerequisite and adapt points under the associated credit by either completely eliminating a permanent irrigation system or significantly reducing the water use for irrigation. I work on many projects that eliminated the need for an irrigation system by utilizing native and adaptive plants that can survive on rain, and some projects supplemented irrigation by rainwater harvesting in cisterns and using the stored water during dry days. Once established, native and drought-tolerant plants generally required little to no irrigation.
