Mapping the IA to the WordPress template hierarchy
With information architecture in place I like to map it to the WordPress template hierarchy. That way I can identify which template file is going to affect each of the pages and posts within my site. Looking at the structure of my information architecture I can now grab each element and map it to the template hierarchy, so we'll start at the top with the home page. I know that I want the home page to have a custom template. And when I look in the template hierarchy, I see that for the front page I can use a template file named front-page.php to create a custom template just for the front page. In my architecture I also have a standard Blog section. And for the index page of the blog section I'm going to use index.php which is the standard template. My Blog section also has a set of categories and single posts. And for these categories and tags I'll use the standard files, category.php and tag.php, and for single blog posts we'll use single.php.
