Join Morten Rand-Hendriksen for an in-depth discussion in this video Installing and activating Twenty Sixteen, part of WordPress Themes: Twenty Sixteen.
- The Twenty Sixteen theme was released with WordPress 4.4, which came out in December of 2015. That means if you've installed a fresh version of WordPress and you're watching this course in 2016, the Twenty Sixteen theme is what you'll see when you visit the front end of your site for the first time. If you're upgrading WordPress from a previous version or if you have a different theme activated, Twenty Sixteen should be installed in your site, but you have to activate it from the back end. In that case, either go to the customizer, click the Change button next to the Active theme, and select the Twenty Sixteen theme from the list.
But as you can see, Twenty Sixteen is already activated for me. Alternatively, you can also go to the Dashboard, go to Appearance and Themes, and from here, select the Twenty Sixteen theme. If you don't see Twenty Sixteen as an option, it means the theme is not installed. In that case, click Add New, make a search up here for Twenty Sixteen, and when it appears, simply click on it, and then click on the Install button that would appear down here, just like it does when I hover over one of the other themes.
This will automatically install Twenty Sixteen into your WordPress site, and from here on, you can start using it on your own site. Once Twenty Sixteen is installed and activated, you can see it on the front end of your site, and it's quite easy to recognize because it has this border that spans around the entire theme and also spans around the bottom. So as I scroll up and down you'll notice there is this dark border on the bottom of the screen, and this is a unique feature that you'll only find in the Twenty Sixteen theme.
