Join Morten Rand-Hendriksen for an in-depth discussion in this video Installing and activating Simone, part of WordPress Themes: Simone.
Simone is a free, responsive, accessible, high resolution theme built by this guy, Morten Rand Hendriksen. And yes, that guy is me. Simone was built as part of a larger course in the lynda.com directory, called WordPress Building Themes from Scratch Using Underscores. If you watch this course, you'll learn how Simone was built from scratch and you'll build your own version of Simone from scratch. That way you can create Simone itself, or you can create your own version and build it into something entirely different.
This is also why Simone was released for free in the wordpress.org themes directory. That way, if you want to, you can simply grab the theme, install it on your site, and get all the features, right out of the box. Or you can grab the theme, install it on your site, and then build a child theme on top of it, or use it as a baseline for your own custom theme. Simone is in constant evolution. So, the version you see here in the WordPress.org themes directory has evolved from the version I built for the Underscores course.
And there is future development happening on Simone right now. So, if you want to see the most recent version of Simone, the one that has yet to reach the WordPress.org themes directory, you can also go to GitHub under github.com/more10/simone. And here, you'll get the most recent version of the theme. And you can also file issues, feature requests, and even fork the theme to make your own version of it. But for now we're going to look at Simone, and how you can use it in your own WordPress site. As you can see, it's available directly from the WordPress.org themes directory.
And that means, if you go to your self-hosted WordPress site. Go to the admin panel. Navigate to appearance and themes and click on Add New. You can now search for Simone. Here it is. And from here you can install it directly into your site. Now the theme is downloaded, unpacked, and installed, and you can either do a live preview of the new theme with your current content, or you can simply click Activate to activate the theme on your site. Once Simone is active on your site, you can go back to the front page, and you should see this nice blue heading.
Large featured images, and a side bar on the right hand side. Now that Simone is installed, we can start customizing the theme to make it look exactly the way you want.
