Join Morten Rand-Hendriksen for an in-depth discussion in this video Installing and activating Jetpack Sharing, part of WordPress Plugins: Social Media Buttons.
The first plugin we're going to use the add social media sharing buttons to individual blog posts and pages in our self-hosted WordPress site is www.jetpackbywordpress.com. If you've watched other WordPress plugin courses here at www.lynda.com or you've used Jetpack before, you know that Jetpack is not like other plugins. Normally, a plugin will introduce one or two features into your self-hosted site, features like sharing buttons for instance. Jetpack is quite different.
Jetpack, by Wordpress.com, is kind of a mothership plugin that ships with a long list of other plugins built in. They can then activate or deactivate as you want. The idea behind Jetpack is to introduce all the features that are available to Wordpress.com users. Into your self-hosted WordPress site. Now, in many cases, that also means you need to link the Jetpack install in your self-hosted site to your WordPress.com account so that you, you can take advantage of the WordPress.com infrastructure.
But for the feature that we're going to be looking at in this course, the sharing feature, we don't need to make that link. If you want to know more about all the features that are available for Jetpack currently, you can go to jetpack.me. Here, you get a list of every single feature that is currently available, and you see each of them as a flag here on this page, where you can either read the short description or click to learn more. And if you go to the site and then come back a couple of months later. You are likely to see that this list keeps increasing. That's because, Jetpack is, like I said, a mothership.
And, as new features come online on WordPress.com, those features are also baked into this plugin, and become available to your site, because you have Jetpack enabled. That means, all you have to do, is keep your Jetpack installation, and your site up to date. And new features will just magically appear within your site, and you can choose whether you want to activate them, or not. In this course, we're going to look at one particular feature, it's this sharing option here. This sharing feature was previously a standalone plugin but it was baked into Jetpack to add functionality to it.
Now before we install Jetpack, I want to point out one important thing. As you can see, Jetpack is a very large plugin with a lot of functionality in it. So if you're only looking to add sharing buttons, this is not the right solution for you. However, if you're already using Jetpack, or you plan on using any of the other features that are within Jetpack, then you can use Jetpack to also add sharing buttons. Jetpack is available from the WordPress theme directory, so to install it, all I have to do is go to my site.
Go to the dashboard. Navigate to plugins. And select Add New. And from here, I simply search for Jetpack. And select the first option that becomes available, Jetpack by WordPress and created by automatic. So here I'll click Install Now, click OK. The plugin is now downloaded, unpacked and installed into my site and all I have to do is click Activate Plugin. When I click this activation button, I see Jetpack appear as a new menu item in the left-hand main menu of my Admin panel.
And when I click on this menu item, I am taken directly to the administration page for the Jetpack plugin. And from here I can see all the same features that I saw on jetpack.me. And you notice that some of these features now also have an activate button on them, so that I can choose to activate them if I want to. And that's what we're going to do in the next movie.
