WordPress themes are built on DRY (don't repeat yourself) development principles and rely on an advanced templating model. This video tutorial shows you how WordPress themes work by following the process from URL entry in a browser to the final output in the browser window.
- [Instructor] It's important to understand…how a theme actually works before we start building one.…You see, rather than provide a single template…for each individual scenario,…WordPress uses a distributed templating system…based on DRY development practices.…To make sense of all this,…let's first look at what happens…when you enter an address to a WordPress post…into a browser.…In the address bar of the browser…you would put in the human readable URL.…Something like this:…https://mor10.com/test-drive.…But this is just a human readable URL.…
The actual URL to the post is this:…https://mor10.com/?p=2726.…That 2726 is the ID…to the post object we want to retrieve from the database…and display on the front end.…What happens now is this:…that ID is sent to the database server.…The database server says,…in this case 2726 is a post…and that information is sent back to WordPress.…WordPress now goes and grabs the correct template,…which in this case would be single.php,…which is the template for regular posts…and single.php in turn…
