Join Morten Rand-Hendriksen for an in-depth discussion in this video How this course works, part of WordPress: Building a One-Page Style Site.
This course is targeted at intermediate to advanced WordPress developers. That said, you can follow along with this course even if you don't consider yourself an advanced WordPress developer, because I've created a set of exercise files that cover all the code examples we are going to be using. These exercise files are available to all users. When you go to the site you find the exercise files, and when you extract them onto your computer you'll get a folder called exercise-files. And within this exercise files there's another folder called cold-snippets.
And if you open cold-snippets, and open the index.html file, the code snippets will open in your browser. From here, you can navigate to the current movie you are watching. Let's say for example, this one, Creating a Custom Testimonials Loop. And here, you have all the code you need to make everything work. You see that each of the code snippets is prefixed by the page or template it's going to be in. And then you have the entire segment of code that you will be using in that particular movie.
You'll see me using these snippets throughout the course. And even if I'm not referring to a snippet, if I'm writing code, in most cases, you'll find a snippet that contains that same code, unless I'm talking about one or two single lines of code. Once you've worked through the project, it also means that you can use these snippets in your own projects later. And the entire point of this course is that you don't have to follow my example exactly. As I walk through the examples in this course I will be using the Simone theme that we created for lynda.com, and that's available from the WordPress.org theme directory for free.
You can choose to use this theme to build on top of or you can use any other theme, and you can do the process I'm showing in this course either in a main theme or in a child theme. The principles and practices used in this course are universal and can be applied to any site and any theme at any point. And you can also pick and choose which components you want to use. So, with the code snippets available, you're ready to start following along with this course.
- Creating a foundation for the front page with a child theme, styles, and dummy content
- Using custom queries to display content from different pages
- Adding testimonials
- Adding a custom menu
