Join Morten Rand-Hendriksen for an in-depth discussion in this video Getting and installing ACF, part of WordPress Plugins: Advanced Custom Fields (2014).
Advanced custom fields is a free plug-in you can directly from the WordPress theme directory. So to install it, all you have to do is go to your WordPress site, go to the back end, and navigate to plug-ins and click add new. From here you can search for advanced custom fields, and this will take you directly to the Advanced Custom Fields plug-in created by Elliot Condon. You'll also notice that there's a series of extensions that you can get to Advanced Custom Fields that are available directly from the WordPress plug-in directory.
You see them here, they're called advanced custom fields, nav menu fields, fields migration clean-up, next gen gallery custom fields, and so on. And you can also get some of these directly from the advancedcustomfields.com website. But for now, we're just going to focus on the core plug-in itself. This first one so I'm going to install it by clicking install now. The plug-in is downloaded, unpacked, and installed, and now I can activate it. And once activated, you'll notice you get a new menu item on your admin menu right here at the bottom called Custom Fields.
And here you can create custom fields, you can also export custom fields and it can manage the add-ons for custom fields. So now the plug-in is installed and we have the menu item on our main menu. We know that the plug-in works.
