Light most photo portfolio themes for WordPress, the Minimatica theme uses the featured images function, to display these images on the front page. The featured images function in WordPress, it's actually a very advanced function that resizes images to fit with the theme. And each theme ships with a list of image sizes it's going to use. The problem is, when we uploaded the photos to the site, they were uploaded while we were using the Twenty Eleven theme, which has its set sizes. The minimatica theme uses a different set of image sizes.
So we need to resize all our images to fit with what minimatica needs. This sounds complicated but as with most things in WordPress, there's a plug-in created just for this purpose. It's called Regenerate Thumbnails and all it does is regenerate the thumbnails to fit with the current theme. So we will install this plug-in, go to Plugins, Add New and search for regenerate thumbnails and we will install this plugin and Activate it.
Once activated, you will find the Regenerate Thumbnail function under Tools, so we scroll down to Tools, you see we now have a new button saying Regenerate Thumbnails. And when I click on it, we get to a single page that allows us to click one button that says Regenerate All Thumbnails. When I do this, WordPress will cycle through every single photo on the site, create the new versions and the new sizes of the thumbnails that I need for this current theme, and then save them into the system.
This might take some time if you have a lot of images. When the process is done, we can go back to the front page and reload it and you will see that the images will be cropped differently. It's a subtle difference but WordPress has now resized images to fit what minimatica is looking for and as a result for example, when you hover over the picture of the monkey, we see the entire monkey rather than the image where his head is cut off. The regenerate's thumbnails plug-in should always be used whenever you switch from one theme to another.
That way you know that the current theme always has the image sizes it's looking for.
