- [Instructor] The table of contents provides one way for your readers to determine what the content is in your document. But if someone picks up a book or an article and wants to be able to quickly determine whether the topic they're looking for is included, they'll usually flip to the back and open the index. And you can index your documents in Microsoft Word, it has that feature. I don't want to say that it's easy. It's actually pretty tedious, because you need to go in and mark all of the items that you want to have appear in the index. On the other hand, once you've done that, generating the index is really, really fast. There are two ways to mark items for an index. The first method is a manual method. And you will work your way through the document and every time you find text that you believe should be indexed, you'll mark that for the index.
