Creating a new style by definition

We explored how to create a style by example. You can also create styles from scratch using what's called Creating a Style by Definition. As you can see, this document is simply using the Normal style on most paragraphs. I can click anywhere, and up here at the top in the Classic Styes box, you'll see that the Normal style is in use, even on the heading up here. Let's go ahead and create some styles and then apply them. We're going to begin by opening up the Styles pane, by using the keyboard shortcut, Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S, or you can click on the Expand button underneath this Change Styles button.

One of the reasons it's important to remember that keyboard shortcut is because when you switch views, when you're not on this Home tab, you won't be able to see your Expand button from the other Ribbons. So, if you remember that keyboard shortcut, you won't have to go back to the Home key to expand that. Now, let's select Cycle California, the heading up here at ...
