Quality of service

- [Instructor] Internet protocol is a connectionless best effort protocol, meaning there's no guarantee it will get to its final destination. Quality of service makes sure that voice data is prioritized when traveling through an IP network. Now, when you implement quality of service, real-time traffic is delivered first, before everything else, such as Word documents or email. Quality of service is also called type of service, quality of service, or in some cases, differential services. This is the field value in an IP header that marks priority traffic. Now, the concept of priority of service, or type of service, or quality of service, has been around a long time. In fact here, I'm at the original IP RFC, RFC 791. And if you look here, there is a field value in IP version 4 that talks about type of service. There are eight bits or one byte that allows you to modify that header to push up the priority.
