- [Instructor] Businesses choose a voiceover IP solution to save money on phone calls and because it can integrate within a unified communication system. When implementing a voiceover IP solution, it must ensure the same or better quality as a tradition telephone network. Many things can affect voice quality. Issues include latency, which is the delay in packet delivery; jitter, which is delay variation of packet delivery; and packet loss, which is dropped packets. On an internal network, there are a few things that we can proactively do to ensure that the network can handle the voice traffic such as network bandwidth, equipment selection, and configuring quality of service. Now, studies show that adding more bandwidth is not the answer. A proactive approach is to shape the traffic. Using a packet shaper can improve the performance of time-sensitive applications by throttling back nonessential traffic and prioritizing the voiceover IP traffic.
