Remote Desktop for Windows server

- [Instructor] I'm on a Windows 10 computer and I'm going to show you how to enable Remote Desktop on a server. So first, I'm going to remote into the server, and I'll show you how I set that up. Under the Search box in the Windows 10 computer, I'm just going to type in Remote for Remote Desktop and there it is, it opens up. And I'm going to remote into a domain controller. And I'm logging in. Now, the way you set this up is by clicking on Control Panel to start with. And then clicking on System, and this is on a 2019 server but it's the same thing for previous versions. And then you want to click on Remote Settings. And Remove Settings, you want to make sure that the checkbox is allowed for allow remote connections to this computer. If you choose do not allow remote connections, then obviously, you're not going to get any access. Now, when you click on Allow, you also have this additional option for allow connections only from computers running the Remote Desktop with network-level authentication. Although it's recommended, it's only a good idea if the computers that you're connecting to that server are members of the domain. So if you're remoting in say your system administrator from home and your home computer's not a member of the domain, and you try to remote in, and this box is checked, you're not going to get in. So if you are only using domain joined computers to remote in, then you can leave it checked. It's totally up to you. Next, you want to go into where it says select users and you can see whoever it is that enabled Remote Desktop is automatically going to have access. But you can click Add and type in any user you want. Now, the user that you add in here must have domain administrator types of rights. Otherwise, when you try to log in, then you'll get a message, even though you're allowed here, you'll get a message that you're being blocked by the policy. You can go in and edit group policy and make other changes but that would tend to make things less secure. So it's just a better idea to make your user have the rights needed, rather than changing the policy itself. Now let's take a look at some of the other features that we have here. I'll bring this over and we'll put it into a partial window. And one of those nice features is going to be copy and paste. So I'll just go ahead and create a text document and I'll right click on it and choose Copy and I'll choose Paste and we can also do cut and paste as well. Now, we cannot do drag and drop. That doesn't work. We see that we get the circle with the slash in it. But we can do the copy and paste. Another nice feature would be printing. So remember that printing is supported as long as it is to a local printer and if we click on Search and type in Printers, you'll see it's no longer in the Control Panel in Server 2019, it's in the System Settings. And here we see a redirected printer. This is the print to PDF and then we also have the HPShared printer as well. So we should be able to print from the host computer into the remote controlled computer anything that shows up on that screen. If we try to print to a network printer, it's not supported but it still may work. You can give it a try. You need to make sure that the print drivers are in both locations and if it's missing on the server, you'll need to download the proper driver for that printer that's on the original host computer. Most in most cases, it will pick it up and automatically download it and install the drivers for you. Some other features are found by going into the Remote Desktop program and clicking on Show Options and go to Local Resources. And here, if we click on More, we can see all the different things that we can share with our computer that we're using to connect to the server, such as drives, ports, smart cards, video capture devices and some other supported plug and play. Using Remote Desktop into a server is the most popular way to connect to troubleshoot servers for clients because it is quick and easy to connect. It's included with the operating system and includes many great features.
