Perform a clean installation - Windows Tutorial

- [Instructor] So you have your Windows 10 installation DVD, or USB drive, and you are ready to perform a clean installation. Great, let's get started. This part is generally stress free. You simply boot to the installation media and follow the steps. Most computers are configured to look for installation media on external drives before booting to the internal hard disk. If you believe your computer is configured this way, once we start the installation process, watch for the prompts that say, Press any key to boot to a CD or DVD, and do so. The installation process will start automatically. If the computer doesn't offer the option to boot to the installation media, you'll need to enter the computer BIOS and configure it so it will. This means you'll have to restart and watch for a prompt that tells you to press a specific key to enter additional settings. Often, that's F2, F12, or something similar. Once inside the BIOS, navigate to the boot options and use the keyboard to make changes. So when you're ready to install, simply right-click Start, point to Shut down or sign out, and click Restart. After the computer reboots, installation will begin. You'll encounter a few prompts during setup. All you need to do is follow along and answer the questions as needed. On the first screen, you'll choose your language to install, your time and currency format, and your input method. These are all fine on my screen, so I'll click Next. I'll click Install now. If you're prompted to choose an installation to install, select the one you want and click Next. Click I accept the license terms, and click Next. Because this is a clean installation, we are going to need to click Custom. Upgrade isn't going to work for us. When you get to the where to install Windows page, most of the time, you'll choose the default drive. However, you can choose a different partition if multiple partitions are available. There are tools here to create new partitions as well. For the most part though, you'll just click the drive offered and click Next. The installation process will begin, and the computer will reboot at least once during the process. Once the installation gets far enough along, you'll hear a little bit about Cortana, Microsoft's digital assistant, and you'll see screens regarding your region and other settings. If you see at any time the prompt to boot to a CD or DVD drive, don't do that. That will restart the installation process from the beginning. Now we're ready to choose our region. I'll click United States and click Yes. Now I'll choose the keyboard layout. I'll skip the option to add a second keyboard layout, and continue. Once you're ready to set up your device, you can set it up for personal use, or for an organization. For the sake of simplicity, I'll set this up for personal use, and I'd like to show you about the Microsoft account too. Microsoft suggests and I do too that you sign in with a Microsoft account if you're prompted. If you have one, type it in, and if not, click Create account to get one. Then, type in your password. Let's create a PIN. I'll create a simple four digit PIN but you can include letters and symbols if you'd like. You can also link your phone to the new PC. I'll click Do it later. You can also decide to use OneDrive, Microsoft's online storage and sync system, and/or Cortana. I'll click Next. And I'll click Decline for now for Cortana, but you could click Accept. You can always turn it on later once you get Windows up and running. Go ahead and read this screen about activity history, and decide if you want to enable it or not. It lets you continue what you were doing when you switch devices using the same Microsoft account. I'll click Yes. Here's where we choose the privacy settings for the device. We have options like speech recognition, find my device, location, diagnostic data and more. You can turn any of these off. Just move the slider from Yes to No. I'll click Accept. We are almost to the end. Once installation completes, you'll see a little intro to Microsoft Edge, which is Windows 10 new web browser. I'll click the x here. Now we are ready. It's a best practice to check for updates right after installation. And you can do that from Start, Settings, and Update and Security. Notice that it already says the device is missing important security and quality fixes, so I'll go ahead and click Check for updates. It's going to take a while to get all of these updates and get them installed, and we won't wait for that. If this happens with your installation, you can minimize this window and continue to use your computer as desired.
