- We want to continue our lesson talking about networking in Windows 7 and in this particular lesson, we're gonna focus on the IP version 4 protocol or addressing protocol. This is a quick review, quick reminder. We're talking about the network layer of the Open System Interconnection model and this is where we're going to be having the IP address in our packets. Again, if we look at the packets, the IP address from my source and destination are gonna go here in the header and we're going to route based on the IP address rather than the host name. It's right here at the beginning of the packet we're talking about where this address exists. Remembering that all the way up here, layer seven is where I'm placing the data as I'm building and transporting with the other content in between. How do we create or generate an IP version 4 address? We refer to the IP version 4 addresses being a dot decimal address. That means we're using these dots. There's three of them.
