Using RADIUS to secure remote access

- RADIUS is an authentication service that's been with us for a long time. It's been used by dial-up providers to keep a list of users that are allowed to access the network, along with their passwords and any special properties or restrictions. This was particularly useful because it pulled the list of users away from the border of the network. Hacking the border router didn't necessarily compromise user information. This concept of having a server authenticate connections to the network is still named RADIUS, or Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service, but its use has expanded. Wireless networks that need controlled access may use a RADIUS server to authenticate logins to the WIFI access point rather than having a single passcode for that wireless environment. Also, VPNs, which we compare to dial-in connections previously, can use RADIUS as a means of authenticating users without placing their login credentials on the remote access server.
