- [Narrator] In the previous segment, we talked about two different uses for certificates. The certificates can be used to secure a conversation, or they can be used to verify identity. Where you want to go to obtain a certificate will depend on precisely what you want to do with it. Certificates are issued by certificate authorities, and you have the choice of going outside your company to purchase them, or creating a certificate authority of your own. The decision to build or to buy should be given the same consideration as any other decision about outsourcing. If an external company can do it better than you can, you outsource. When it comes to outsourcing certificates, there is one thing an external company is probably able to do better than you can, and that is establish trust between you and people that don't work for your company.
