- [Instructor] Storage migration is a utility that Microsoft introduced in 2018. So what is storage migration? Storage migration service makes it easier to migrate servers to a newer version of Windows Server. It provides a graphical tool that inventories data on servers and then transfers that data and configuration to newer servers. The shared data and applications all move to the newer server. The new server then takes on the name and IP information of the old server and the old server gets renamed and the IP address switches to DHCP. Prior to starting, you need to have another server online with an equal amount of storage that is not part of the cluster, but is a domain member running data center. We need three or four servers in total. One will be the server that performs the migration, referred to as the orchestrator server, and that needs to run Windows Admin Center which is a web based tool.
