Protocols used by Routing and Remote Access
- [Narrator] When you start to configure a VPN, you'll find that there are multiple types of protocols that will be used. When you consider that a VPN is layering private communication inside a public network, it should come as no surprise that there are protocols or rulesets at every layer. In addition to the transport protocols that carry the data from one end to the other, there are also connection and security protocols to make sure that it's done correctly. The most common protocol to connect computers over the internet is Point-To-Point Protocol, or PPP. The first connection protocol used for tunneling through Point-To-Point Protocol connections was the Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol, or PPTP. And when it was introduced in 1995, most connections to the internet were over dial-up phone lines. They were extremely slow, so it was important to use that throughput efficiently.
