Private vs. public IP addressing

- [Instructor] Originally, IP addresses were created for the main purpose of allowing computers to communicate on the internet. But those IP addresses were what's known as public IP addresses. We also have certain private IP ranges that have been reserved to be only used privately and forbidden to be active out on the internet. So what are these ranges? Well, we have an A class range, B class ranges, and C class ranges. The A class range is the 10 network. So 10 dot anything will not work on the internet. Okay, that is strictly for internal use only. We have B class ranges which are 172.16 through 172.31 dot anything. So anything within all those B class ranges, those cannot be used on the internet. And then finally, we have the C class ranges of 192.168.0, to 192.168.255. All of those C class ranges cannot be used on the internet. Now there is actually a fourth range that has also been reserved, but it has a very specific purpose. It's a B class range and its 169.254 dot anything…
