In this video, Robert McMillen talks about how to do a live migration of a 2012 R2 server role in Failover Cluster Manager. Failover Cluster Manager has many features and roles you can add but one of the best ones is the ability to move a virtual machine to another node while still keeping that role active. This may be desirable when there is a need to shut down a node to perform maintenance or is there is instability. It may also be necessary if the load is too high on one or more nodes and there is a need to balance the load across other nodes. This can be checked using the Task Manager.
- [Voiceover] One of the great features of…Failover Cluster Manager is the ability to move…a virtual machine from one cluster node…to another without any down time.…And we can do that right in our Failover Cluster Manager…by right clicking on the server that we would like to move.…It has to be at least Windows server 2012 or newer.…And we'll right click and choose "Move."…From here, we're given a couple of options.…One is "Live Migration" the other is "Quick Migration."…Now, "Quick Migration" is twice as fast as "Live Migration,"…but it does bring down the virtual machine during the move.…
"Live migration" allows you to keep…the server up during the move.…We're also given a couple of other options.…One is the "Best Possible Node" or "Select Node."…If you have many nodes in your cluster,…you may want to choose this to let Windows decide…which server node has the most amount…of resources that can handle the move.…Otherwise, you can choose "Select Node"…and pick the node you want.…We'll go ahead and click "HyperV1," click "OK,"…
