- [Instructor] When working with IP Addressing on your network the first thing you need to do is you need to make sure you have a good firm understanding of what an IP Address is. Now yes you might be thinking to yourself well that's pretty easy it's an address that identifies a computer on a network so they can talk to each other. Yes that is the simple definition. But what is the real answer to the question what is an IP Address? Well when working with IP version four because there is also IP version six which we will talk about later, but with IP version four it is a 32 bit address that is used to uniquely identify a computer in network. Okay so there is a little bit more detail for you. It's 32 bits we'll talk in more detail about bits when we get to binary. We know that the IP Address is broken down into two portions we have what's called the network ID portion, which identifies the network that the computer is on.
