Fundamental performance monitoring and troubleshooting

- It's an interesting topic, I think, performance monitoring, because we hear complaints all the time as administrators. "My machine is running too slow," "My server's running too slow," "I'm getting email really slow," "The network is slow," "My Facebook is slow," "The Twitter is slow," "I can't get onto the Skype because it's running too slow," that kind of stuff. We hear this kind of complaint all the time. And, to be honest, it's not changed a whole lot fundamentally since the early days of Windows. How performance monitors work, how analysis and troubleshooting of performance issues work, largely hasn't changed. The tools have changed quite a bit. Some of the techniques have become more refined, more effective and efficient over time. But largely, the concepts haven't changed. But you'd be surprised how often I hear administrators tell me that they don't know, really, how to troubleshoot. They just look at CPU, baseline CPU information. They don't know what a system should be…
