Determine scenario requirements for implementing Storage Spaces Direct

- [Instructor] There are two ways to deploy storage spaces direct and it's for you to know the scenarios with which you would deploy each model. The first deployment model that can be configured is the hyperconverged configuration. In this deployment the compute and storage clusters are one in the same. In other words, you don't have a separate cluster that is managing the compute resources and one managing the storage resources. The storage devices are contained in the compute node themselves. They hyperconverged deployment model is a simpler design that is well suited for simpler deployment scenarios. Virtual machine files are stored on local cluster shared volumes. Hyperconverged deployments are less complex deployments that allow running both compute and storage clusters all in one. This is generally the model that will be used in smaller deployments. It's also desirable from a licensing standpoint compared to the disaggregated model. Out of the two different configuration deployments that can be used for storage spaces direct, the disaggregated model is the more complex. In the disaggregated model the configuration requires two clusters instead of just one. One of the two clusters is used for compute and one is used for storage. Virtual machines are configured to store their files on scale out file servers which are accessed through the network using the SMB3 protocol. This allows for scaling Hyper-V clusters and scale out file servers cluster storage independently. With the disaggregated model deployment you are decoupling the compute from storage so each can be scaled independently of one another and is generally the better suited deployment in large scale rollouts. Both disaggregated and hyperconverged have their advantages when deploying storage spaces direct. Picking the right one for your environment can ensure a smooth rollout and the best performance and cost.
