- [Instructor] When it comes to software defined networking applications, a lot has changed as SDN has matured over time. A multitier application basically means that there's a separation between the database and the client, by putting another device between the two for many reasons. Single tier applications, as we have previously used, had a lot of restrictions when it came to accessing data from a database. The separation that multitier gives us allows administrators to no longer give direct access to the data from the client computer using administrator rights. Changes to business logic or business rules usually implied re deploying new client software to all users. This could be a big administrative effort. And there could be a lot of downtime for large parts of your staff. Another problem associated with having business rules enforced on the client tier, is that it makes the system vulnerable to attacks as client systems can be easily compromised.
