Data deduplication intro

- [Instructor] Data Deduplication can be used by administrators to optimize storage to reduce storage requirements. It's enabled on a volume basis and is installed as a role service to file and storage services. The way data deduplication works is it removes multiple files that are exactly the same and keeps just a single copy. The other files are now pointers to that copy. And if you enable volume shadow service, it keeps additional copies as well. In order for data deduplication to work, there are three components that need to be discussed. The first one is going to be optimized files. These are reparsed points where files once existed. In other words, they're pointers to where the files once were. The second piece is unoptimized files. These are files that are not data deduplicated because of being system or encrypted files or database or other criteria. So in other words, these files cannot be used for data deduplication.
