- [Instructor] Microsoft has made some noteworthy advances in terms of in-place upgrades and we've compared upgrades to migration already in this course. Role migration is an option that's available to you if you're running roles that would survive an in-place upgrade, but your preference is rather than keep the same server and just upgrade the configuration, you want to introduce a new Windows Server into your environment, but still keep these roles and features running the way you're used to. There are two servers involved in making this possible. The source server is the existing server, Windows Server 2012 R2 or newer, that is already running these roles and features as your network requires. The second server you're going to need is a target server. The target server is your new box that's running Windows Server 2019 and it's installed with the roles that you need, but has not yet been configured.
