In this video, Robert McMillen talks about how to properly drain all the roles from a cluster when a node is being shut down. This will protect the cluster roles from corruption and migrate the roles to another node in the cluster for high availability. In Windows Server 2012 conducting planned maintenance on Failover Clusters is dramatically simplified, as these steps are automated in the Node Drain (or Node Maintenance Mode) feature.

One is to pause and drain the roles,…and the other is to pause and do not drain the roles.…
