In this video, Robert McMillen talks about how to cluster the Dynamic Host Control Protocol service. This service automatically feeds IP addresses to hosts. By adding clustering the DHCP service will be made highly available. DHCP failover uses two nodes in a cluster with DHCP installed on them that will be made highly available in case one of the nodes in the cluster fails. It can also be used for load balancing. Unlike 2008, Server 2012 can have both DHCP servers using the same scope running at the same time.
- [Voiceover] In Server 2012 there are many roles…we can add for high availability…in a Server 2012 R2 configuration.…We're gonna talk about Dynmic Host Control Protocol…as one of those roles.…Before we can add this new role,…there is a few things that you should know.…The first is that DHCP failover is only supported…on two servers.…So although other roles can have many more nodes…that run a particular application,…DHCP can only have two.…
The next thing to know is that the hosts…that run DHCP server clustering…must have static IP addresses.…DHCP won't work if the role you're adding…is DHCP, so you must have static…to make that work properly.…Another one is, install the DHCP server role…on to both nodes before you try…to add this into the failover cluster manager.…So they both have to have DHCP…and they both have to be running…before this will work in the cluster manager.…
To demonstrate that we're going to install…the DHCP role on to each of our two servers…and then we're going to add them…into the failover cluster manager.…
