Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR)

- [Instructor] Earlier in this course, I talked to you about something called Classful IP Addressing, okay, which had to do with having to actually go out there and get ranges of IP addresses to get out on the internet. But there are problems with Classful IP Addressing which we now can address through something called Classless Interdomain Routing, or CIDR. And by the way, to kind of shorten what it's called, CIDR, you can call it cider or cidder, or I've even heard it called cedar, however you want to pronounce it. I've always called it cider. So what are the problems with Classful IP Addressing? Well, as we saw earlier, we have a choice between buying a Class A address with almost 17 million IP addresses, or my next option down is Class B, which brings me all the way down to a little over 65,000 IP addresses. Or I can drop down to Class C, which gets me only 254 IP addresses. We really want to have some room in between, and here's why. This is an actual dilemma that we used to…
