- So let's talk a little bit about something called classful IP addressing. Now I do want to let you know that this is a little bit more of a history lesson, more so than something that you would actively use in today's world. and how we got to where we are today. So what is this classful IP addressing? Well originally, when companies wanted to get IP addresses to get out onto the internet, they had to purchase a certain class range of IP addresses. being anywhere from 1 to 126, and it had a subnet mass of 255.0.0.0. We had our B Class ranges, where the first octet was anywhere from 128 to 191, with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. And then we had our C Class range, where the first octet was anywhere from 192 to 223, and it had subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. There was a D Class which was identified by the first octet being 224 to 239 and these addresses, and I shouldn't say they were, they are, these addresses still exist, they are used for multicast transmissions.
