What is usability instrumentation?
- One of the issues with user research is that you're only seeing a small slice of someone's life in the short time you observe them. Wouldn't it be great if you could understand more about what they do and how they do it every time they use your product? Well that's what usability instrumentation is all about. The idea is, that you use markers in your app code or add events to your server log that will help you answer questions that you have about how people are using the thing that you created. Instrumentation data is good at telling you what is happening, but it's much harder to infer why it's happening. Along with your instrumentation, you'll probably still need to conduct some in-person usability work, so that you can work out the reasons behind the behaviors that you see in your metrics.
