What is a desirability study?
- User experience work is often about creating the right emotions in people. We want to make the products we build desirable. But it's hard to directly ask users what emotions they're experiencing. Because people aren't very good at describing how something makes them feel, it helps if there's a thing they can point to and say more like this than that. So, back in 2002, some colleagues of mine from Microsoft, Trish Miner and Joey Benedeck developed a toolkit for helping with just that problem. Participants choose their top five adjectives from a list of 118 words that are each printed on an index card. More importantly, they comment on the reasons they have for choosing each word. This exercise provides a way to understand the adjectives that people use to describe your product or service. The reasons they give for choosing each card helps you understand what it would take to make it more desirable for them in the future. Participants like the technique and give candid feedback. It's…
