- Normal survey return rates can be pretty depressing. 2% rates aren't unusual for general surveys. That means that for every 50 people you sent the survey invitation to, only one will respond. There are exceptions to this. If you have a really passionate audience, they'll be more likely to respond. By passionate I mean either they love your company and want to help you out, or they're really angry or frustrated and want to let you know about it. The problem with passionate respondents is that they might skew your sample. You could end up creating solutions just for the super-engaged or super-angry parts of your audience. Sometimes that works out okay, because the solution benefits everyone. But sometimes that's not the right outcome. There's an easy way to boost participation and that is to pay people.
