- Let's start with probably the lowest bandwidth situation you'll find yourself in for interviews, a phone conversation. You can do a lot to ensure that you make a good impression, even though the interviewer can't see you at all. First off, you need to make sure that the interviewer can hear you clearly and that you can hear them too. That's mostly down to the equipment that you use. You need to find the best quality phone line available to you. Landlines are most often better quality than cell or voice over IP phones, but if you have good cell reception, then a modern cell phone might equal or outperform a landline. Try to find a room without too much echo or background noise. A headset or a good quality headphone and microphone combination can reduce background noise, but be careful that it doesn't use too much noise cancellation, which can make you sound clipped and robotic.
