- [Narrator] Before you started looking for work, it's a good idea to understand how companies hire and how hiring managers choose an individual. Companies are looking for three things. First, someone who is qualified to do the job. Second, someone who will fit in with the organization. And third, someone who can produce results in a team environment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of a bad hire can equal to about 30% of an employee's first year salary. So the first phase of recruiting is geared towards answering the first question, is this person qualified to do the job? The larger and more renowned the company, the more applicants will apply for the same position. According to Glassdoor, the average job opening attracts 250 resumes and only 2% of applicants make it past this first phase.
