- Remember C3PO in Star Wars? If you ask him how many languages he spoke, he'd tell you he was fluent in over six million forms of communication. But, if you asked him what he was, he'd tell you he was a protocol droid. Protocols are pretty important for web developers. They're the different languages that devices use to share information. There are different dialects like POP, SMTP and IMAP, that programs use to talk about mail, and sometimes FTP, the File Transfer Protocol that's used to share files. Now, for web developers the most important language is HTTP, and its more secure cousin HTTPS. HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It's designed to transfer information from languages like HTML. It works by allowing someone using a browser, which is often referred to as a client, to send requests to software that handles them.
