Empathy and user experience

- Empathy, empathy, empathy. Everybody's talking about it. But are they really? Are they really talking about true empathy? Or are they flitting around a fashionable buzzword with careless abandon? If you're like me, you really care about true empathy and want to get to the bottom of this empathy puzzle. Maybe you experience tremendous empathy now for your friends, family, and coworkers, and when you go to work and do your job, maybe you experience the same level of empathy. Or maybe you struggle to really feel for the end users of products your team develops. Regardless of where you're starting, you know for certain that a better understanding of those customers can make you and everyone on your team better at creating products that work, better at conducting research and conveying results. You, yes, you, can use your powers of good to help create a culture of empathy toward product success. I'm Cory Lebson, author of "The UX Careers Handbook," past president of the User Experience Professionals Association, and a longtime UX practitioner who's had to grapple frequently with empathy through the years. Come join me, and we'll walk through how you build your empathy skills, where empathy intersects user experience, and how to produce deliverables that convey critical empathy to everyone around you.
